TV and national newspapers for days shows us the disaster occurred due to Messina rains that have swept downstream a mountain of mud and debris, killing and destroying all that was.
After the pain, now is the time of the controversy and the identification responsibilities: houses built where it was not necessary, permits issued without any criteria, unheeded warnings and alarms. In Kinshasa
The same thing happens. The capital of DR Congo, with its (perhaps) ten million inhabitants, is booming, people build anywhere, there are no permits or do not ask ... and since the town lies on the banks of the river Congo, only done on a basin of alluvial sand, urban sprawl is making entire neighborhoods of shacks crumble.
This summer I was in Burundi. The same problem. There, however, hilly or plateau, the landslides are due almost entirely to the savage deforestation: a small area used to the limit, entire hills on fire to make pastures, and the earth rebels.
Whether Messina, Kinshasa or the interior of Burundi, the problems do not change. Perhaps it serves a more comprehensive reflection on the prevailing pattern of land use.
